How to Choose a Dog Bed for Winter

The MichanDirect team

Cold floors, draughty hallways and muddy walks all change what your dog needs from a bed in winter. Here is what to look for, from getting the size right to choosing a cover that survives the wettest months.

1. Measure your dog

Measure your dog from the nose to the base of the tail while they are lying stretched out, then add about 15 to 20 cm. That gives them room to stretch without hanging over the edge. Compare your measurement with the dimensions in the size guide on each product page rather than going by the size name, because sizes vary between beds.

2. Match the bed to how they sleep

  • Curlers tuck themselves into a ball. A round bed or one with raised sides helps them feel snug.
  • Sprawlers stretch out flat. Choose a large rectangular cushion or mat.
  • Leaners like to rest their head on something. A bolster or sofa-style bed gives them a built-in pillow.
  • Burrowers love to hide under blankets. A semi-enclosed bed or pet sleeping bag suits small dogs and cats.

3. Think about warmth

  • Raised sides block draughts at floor level.
  • A plush or fleece top feels warmer to lie on than a smooth fabric.
  • Place the bed away from outside doors and draughty spots, but not right up against a radiator or fire.
  • If your dog sleeps in a crate, a soft crate pad with a non-slip base makes it more comfortable.

4. Make washing easy

Winter means wet paws. A removable, washable cover is the single most useful feature, and a water-resistant base helps protect the cushion inside. On hard floors, a non-slip base stops the bed sliding around. Shake the bed out every week, wash the cover following the care label, and let it dry fully before you put it back.

5. Older dogs and puppies

Older dogs often find a thicker cushion and a low edge to step over more comfortable. If your dog has stiff joints or another health problem, ask your vet what kind of bed they recommend. Puppies tend to chew, so a budget-friendly washable bed makes sense until they have grown out of it.
